Nestled in the valley of the Aventino River within the Majella Mountains, a place with a rich history in the wool & textile industry.  The birth place of the ‘Taranta’, a brightly patterned woollen blanket.  In the Middle Ages, Abruzzo sheep were herded here to shelter them from the harsh Winters.  Learning Arabic weaving techniques, Tarantolesi people wove Taranta blankets from locally grown wools. Wool was dyed naturally using grapes for brown, snails and beetles for blue and saffron for yellow – this colour was only woven into the blankets for the wealthy.  The church of San Biagio (protector of wool workers) was erected in C15, today only it’s carved wooden door remains.  With only one weaver left in town; Sig. Merlino, the Taranta blanket is dangerously close to extinction

Made from premium Australian extrafine Merino wool.
